News: July 2024 Newsletter

Hello, All Members and Friends – at last, I am glad to be in touch again! Please see below for details of our next event:

Recent News:

  • The date for the AGM has been set to coincide with the visit to SA by Carl and Lina, Life Members from WA. They are direct descendants of Muriel through her sister, Isabel and niece, Adrienne (Isabel’s daughter). I very much look forward to seeing them again after such a long time since they last visited SA.
  • Our new exhibition room at NCW House is coming along nicely. Special thanks to Denise for advice and practical assistance in setting up. Thanks also to Steph, Louise, Jillian and most recently Ben for vital (and ongoing!) assistance in setting up the office in our space in the Ruth Gibson Room – it has been greatly appreciated. The storage pod will finally be removed from Modbury Heights in August. Finding places for all the MMS material has been a huge challenge.
  • MMS is pleased to acknowledge the 70th Anniversary of the Committee of the Woman’s War Memorial House Inc. and thank them for graciously accepting The Society as tenants. Our gallery will be open on the anniversary celebration day, and I hope to see many members who may not have had the opportunity to visit before.
  • Preliminary work on the production of the children’s books and distribution of the monograph in Queensland remain priorities for the fast-diminishing remainder of 2024. Minor amendments to the monograph text (typos, etc) will be completed shortly – thanks, Mark!
  • Our public liability insurance continues with the Don Dunstan Foundation, saving MMS about $350 annually. Thanks, DDF!
  • It will not be possible to visit our friends and contacts in Hastings and London this year – hopefully soon. With big elections just over in the UK and coming in the USA in November and Australia sometime soon, there is much to discuss in the interests of Democracy.
  • The MM Award is not yet entrenched in all SA schools. Members wishing to do so are encouraged to contact any schools where they have connections to see if it is being encouraged on their sites. Open to all students, schools can adopt their own criteria (around Education Department guidelines). Winners can be acknowledged at a ceremony held at Parliament House annually in November, or a Society representative can visit schools for special assemblies. Our thanks to The Office of The Speaker and Education Minister Blair Boyer and his department for their continued support of the award.
  • Condolences to the family of our late members Elizabeth Thomas and Sylvia Cooper. Elizabeth was a Foundation member and long-time friend of The Society and Gosse Family. Sylvia passed away in June and along with her husband, Dennis and family, moved to Australia from Hastings. Dennis was one of the very few people we know of who knew Muriel while she was alive.

Memberships:

Thank you to all members for being so patient and waiting for their receipts – coming soon!
**Please remember, to include your name when paying by direct debit – We have several payments we are unable to identify in Jan and Feb and will need your help to allocate **

The new membership rates applied from 1/7/23, with annual full membership now $20.00 and concessional membership $10.00, our first increases since our formation in 2008. Advice of any necessary adjustments to paid-to dates will be sent (as usual) as part of the Xmas mailout in November.

Again, special thanks to groups and members who maintain continuous membership
and also make donations – these extra funds really help!

Our merchandise, the ephemera of the future, is well-priced and makes a wonderful Christmas gift – or thoughtful present any time of the year.

Public talks continue at a very reduced pace – please recommend Muriel for gatherings and after-dinner entertainment. We are always keen to make new contacts and friends!
