Emeritus Professor Clem Macintyre on
‘Catherine Helen Spence and Multi Member Electorates’
Please join The Muriel Matters Society for an insightful talk by Professor Clem Macintyre, as he explores the life and legacy of Catherine Helen Spence, one of South Australia’s most pioneering suffragists.
Professor Macintyre will delve into Spence’s pivotal role in advancing women’s rights and political reform, particularly her advocacy for multi-member electorates, which were in place in South Australia until 1938.
Professor Clement Macintyre joined the University of Adelaide Politics Department in 1991 after his first academic post at Victoria University. He was born in Melbourne and educated at Murdoch University and the University of Cambridge. His teaching at Adelaide covered both European and Australian politics. His research interests include twentieth-century British political history and contemporary Australian politics, especially the study of parliamentary institutions.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn about Spence’s lasting impact on the state’s electoral landscape and the broader suffrage movement.
