Recent News:
- The newsletter goes out to all members and friends – all over The World. I know people can’t attend Adelaide events if they live in Melbourne or London, but it’s a quick and easy to keep in touch and maybe hear some of your news, too!
- Mari Takayanagi (author, Westminster Parliamentary Archivist and MMS UK Friend) visit to Adelaide in Feb 2025 was great fun and enjoyed by all. Thanks to Lord Mayor for hosting a morning tea and tour at the Town Hall before our ‘walkabout’ to Parliament House on a very hot day! Thanks also to PH Research Library for their kind tour.
- On March 7, I attended the ‘Stand Tall’ event – the unveiling of the statue of Prof Emerita Fay Gale (1932-2008) at the Barr Smith Lawns, University of Adelaide. After 18 months work by our very own MMS maquette creator, Meliesa Judge, this is the first life-sized representation of a woman at the university. If you have not already done so, do go to see this impressive addition to Adelaide’s public art.
- King Charles III’s Xmas card arrived, via Wendy (thanks!!), no mention and nothing from Queen Camilla this year. Will bring to the General Meeting 26/7.
- Congratulations to MMS member Heidi Ing – SA’s 2025 Historian of The Year!
- Thanks to MMS Member Julia R for donating a copy of ‘Shoulder to Shoulder’ (companion to BBC series on WSPU and The Pankhursts). Always grateful for donations – added to the library or re-gifted, as appropriate.
- A ‘Late Night Live’ radio spot (still need to check podcast about 3am!) on Thursday 26/6 was heard by a very attentive member who duly reported the presenter ‘knew all about Muriel’ while his guest ‘knew nothing’ – that quickly changed! And another Melbourne listener rang in during the segment and spoke about the DVD docudrama. All publicity is good publicity!
- The 80th Anniversary of the dropping of the atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki is fast approaching in this still deeply troubled world – please put in your diary, held opposite Memorial Hospital in the city, full details to follow or see the G F Smith Peace Foundation site.
- MMS will be observing UN DHR Day on 10 December at our peace pole (front garden, NCW House, 95 South Terrace). Now an annual event, we must continue this Global Peace initiative – an important aspect of Muriel’s life’s work. We are still collecting signed copies – we remain well short of the 10,000 signature target required. Onwards!
- Work on interstate monograph distribution continues.
- The MM Award presentations this year will hopefully be our best-ever. More on that to come. Hope to again attend the presentations, hosted by The Speaker and Education Minister, at Parliament House later in the year.
- Thanks to Ben for his continuing dedication to The Society and admin support
- Condolences – many of you will know of the passing of Rosemary Crowley, a foundation MMS member, who died in Victoria in March 2025. Founder of the IWD Breakfast in Adelaide, she was one of the earliest elected (in 1983) SA women Parliamentarians. She will be missed, and our sympathies go to her family and friends. Bread and Roses.
Internationally known WILPF SG and IP Edith Ballantyne died in Geneva in March 2025. Her inspiring work for Peace and Justice, over the decades, is rightly recognised and will be remembered
