Recent News:
- The 110th commemoration event at the Dardanelles Cenotaph (on Kintore Ave) was held on Sunday, 7 September. Organised by Legacy and the War Widows, it is always an honour to attend on behalf of The Society and to remember all those involved in the Gallipoli Campaign. We especially remember Charles Adams Matters (Muriel’s brother,) who died at Lone Pine on 7 August 1915, only days after arriving at the battlefield. While his body was never recovered by our soldiers, it was observed on the front line – clearly identified by his unique moustache. His name lives forever on the Lone Pine Memorial. At this annual ceremony in Adelaide, the place of Charles’ birth, our member Tanya reads the Ataturk Statement. The words are a reflection of the honour and esteem in which the fallen are forever held, and it is always a very moving part of the ceremony.
- Governor-General Sam Mostyn was in Adelaide on Thursday, 23 October, for the Australia Day Council Lunch at Ayers House. I was able to get a pack of information to her with a letter seeking her involvement with The Society. I will advise as soon as I hear back, fingers crossed!
- Work on interstate monograph distribution continues. Changes to the first edition will be finalised soon, so if you’ve noticed any mistakes of any kind, please let me know.
- MMS will observe UN UDHR Day on 10 December at our peace pole in the front garden of the NCW House (95 South Terrace). The Global Peace initiative must continue, and the petition, although well short of 10,000 signatures, will be tabled before Parliament rises for the election.
- We are still collecting signed petitions—and special thanks must go to Trevor for his work above and beyond with the Catholic Church. There will be petitions at many church services on the weekend of 22-23 November. This is particularly timely as Pope Leo has been saying some encouraging things about Peace lately. If you are involved with any Catholic church – or have some time to spare that weekend, please let me know. Unfortunately, it appears the work for Peace will be ongoing. Onwards!
- The MM Award presentations this year will hopefully see an increase in the number of schools participating—more on that to come. Hope to again attend the presentations, hosted by The Speaker and Education Minister, at Parliament House next month.
- Discussions on the likelihood of a performance of ‘Enoch Arden’ by Lord Tennyson continue. Elder Hall seems an ideal venue: centrally located, has a very good piano (essential!) and a connection to Muriel (as she performed there). We may have to find/consider taking a partner on board (like Adelaide University/The Con. perhaps?) and look at having performances Saturday evening and a Sunday matinee (could we get 2 reasonably large audiences?) as there would be expenses to cover (hall hire, pianist and performer fees). We will also need volunteers for front-of-house. This will be the debut of the ‘Enoch Arden’ magic lantern slide collection (includes colour and black & white slides).
- In more exciting artistic news, a donation has been made, in The Society’s name, to our friend and member Naomi Paxton (in London) to facilitate the latest performance foray by her alter ego, Ada Campe. Called ‘Behind the Night Light, ’ it describes a 3-year-old’s imaginary visions after dark. It was first performed in 1913 in theatres and concert halls across the UK. Part of the ‘Being Human’ Festival (6-15 November), tickets are FREE, and more information is at www.beinghumanfestival.org. The MMS logo is on promotional material. It will be staged at the Concert Artistes Assn, on Bedford (!) Street (Covent Garden). Can’t wait to hear feedback – Naomi/Ada never fails to impress! We are grateful for the opportunity to promote Muriel and The Society.
- Condolences – again, more sad news to impart as three of our long-standing members have passed away in recent months. Beryl Miller, Lyn Rivers and Miriam Tonkin. All will be missed. Each made significant contributions in many areas, and they and their good works will be remembered. I was able to attend the memorial gatherings for both Beryl and Miriam. Our sympathies go to their family and friends.
