Recent News:

  • The AGM was well attended, and it was a pleasure to welcome Life Members and WA Matters Family members, Carl and Lina. They have very kindly donated two poetry books that actually belonged to Muriel, found while sorting Muriel’s niece’s estate (Adrienne was Carl’s Mum). With notations in Muriel’s own hand, these are very special items, now available for display. We thank them wholeheartedly and will be eternally grateful for this wonderfully generous gesture.
  • While on the topic of books, thanks to Denise Schumann for her recent donation of several new titles to the library.
  • ‘The Power of Ones’ exhibition in the gallery room at NCW House has been substantially enhanced and is now open for viewing by groups. With two bookings already and other referrals expected, this looks to be our best exhibition yet. Emeritus Professor Clem Macintyre’s forthcoming presentation will also attract additional interest.
  • A direct descendant of Augusta Zadow has been located! A friend of Sonya and long-time local neighbour to Frances, we hope to see her sometime soon.
  • Our MMS UK Friend, Mari Takayanagi (author and Westminster Parliamentary Archivist), will be taking leave to Feb 2025 to pursue some exciting research during this break – a Churchill at Cambridge (Women, Politics and Parliament 1918-1945) and then to the USA for the American Historical Assn’s New York conference and time at Harvard (UK/US comparison of interwar women, politics and Parliament), where we hope she may be able to shed further light on an interesting image of MM and The Grille in the Schlesinger Library.
  • The ‘Schlesinger Drawing’ is the same image we sent recently to MMS member Erin McKellar, who is also pursuing opportunities at Harvard! Hopefully, we will have new information on the image soon – fingers crossed, watch this space!
  • Distribution of the monograph in Queensland is on hold during their current state election. We are ready to go ahead when the dust settles – and as soon as the new Minister is in place!
  • The MM Award presentation at Parliament House will take place on Thursday 14 November. Please make sure your local high school is involved. Open to all students, past winners have been involved in some very interesting projects. Continued thanks to The Speaker and Education Minister Blair Boyer (and his department) for their support of the award.
  • Condolences to the families of members who have recently lost loved ones:
  • Life Member Chris Maddocks was a wonderful, kind individual who gave freely of his time and expertise to The Society. Husband of our head researcher and Life Member, Marie Maddocks, Chris was responsible for The Caravan Map and other resources we deeply value. Frances and Steph represented The Society at the funeral. Chris will be greatly missed, and our deepest condolences go to Marie and her family.
  • Member Elaine Arnold, her husband (former Premier) Lynn and their family have lost their Mum, Granny and Ouma, Jean Arnold. Jean was a presence at many Adelaide events over a long period of time and when ‘introduced’, paid Muriel keen interest. A card has been sent on behalf of The Society.
  • Mary Beasley, trail blazing feminist (and Port Power fanatic)passed away in late September. Mary achieved many ‘firsts’, notably among them SA’s first Commissioner for Equal Opportunity, and was awarded an AM in 2004 for ‘service to Public Sector administration in SA and to the community, particularly as an executive member of organisations in the field of Arts, Education, Health and Community Celebrations’. The Society was represented at the funeral by Frances, who extended our condolences to Mary’s long-time partner, Susan.
