The Centre of Democracy (CoD) opened for the first time last Wednesday on 24 May 2017. It houses a number of important artefacts relating to the development of democracy in South Australia. The Society’s Secretary, Frances Bedford, played Muriel on a lively float that depicted her 1909 balloon protest in London. Muriel Matters Walk is a walking path located in the Adelaide Suburb of Bowden.
The Society is delighted to announce that the Hastings Borough Council offices have been renamed Muriel Matters House! As early as 1908 Muriel agitated in favour of women’s suffrage in the area and ran unsuccessfully as the Labour Candidate for the seat of Hastings at the 1924 election.
